New Horizons

You walk as one who has seen many things,

Eyes to the front, to meet what is to come;

Excited, primed for what the future brings,

Yet still a backward glance for Dad and Mum.

School bag and water bottle held aloft,

You have a stride, where once there was a bounce;

Those eyes are intense- yet they are still soft,

So different, yet  you have not gained an ounce.

In two short weeks you have become a boy.

Who will, in time, become a budding man;

Your transformation brings me such great joy,

Though through my hands your tender years have ran.

As your world grows, my love for you, so deep;

Is with you, from your waking till your sleep.
